In his 2021 book, "The Reluctant Leader," Craig Galati, FSMPS, CPSM, FAIA imparts a powerful message: “It's never too early to start preparing for leadership, for one day, it may be thrust upon you.”
Craig Galati is a prominent figure within the SMPS community, known for his insightful presentations and contributions to the Society on local, regional, and national levels. Craig has worn many hats since joining SMPS in 1999 including president of the Las Vegas chapter, “Blueprints” committee member, Build Business (now Amplify A|E|C) conference committee, and Society president, where he helped develop the powerful vision statement, “Business Transformed Through Marketing Leadership.”
During his tenure as Society president from 2016 to 2017, Galati demonstrated a forward-thinking approach, always aiming for the best outcome for any program's audience. His ability to pose out-of-the-box questions prompts requests for his involvement in various projects, where he consistently brings a valuable architectural perspective and emphasizes the pivotal role of marketing in any successful firm.
As a practicing architect and a business owner, his ability to think like a marketer has made him the excellent leader he has become and enables him to see the big picture and lead people to embrace that vision. Craig’s achievements and contributions reflect his commitment to professional services marketing; his leadership has transformed all of us.”
— Barbara Stiles, FSMPS, CPSM | Vice President, Business Planning WGI, Inc.
In 1983, Craig Galati graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Idaho. Faced with a challenging job market during a recession, Craig and his wife Sally returned to his hometown of Las Vegas, Nevada. He began his career at Holmes & Narver, working at the Nevada Test Site, before moving on to positions at Dobrusky Kittrell Garlock and JMA Architects.
In 1986, when economic challenges hit JMA, Craig took the initiative to assist in marketing and successfully secured several small projects for the firm. His entrepreneurial spirit not only helped the company weather economic fluctuations but also ignited his love for marketing.
In 1988, Craig was offered an associate partnership at Lucchesi & Associates, a young firm. This opportunity marked the beginning of a transformative journey. The firm was renamed Lucchesi, Galati Architects (LGA) in 1990, solidifying Craig's role as a full partner.
“Craig Galati sees the world differently than his peers. Combining his passions for both architecture and marketing led him to create a purpose-centered practice focused on creating life-giving solutions for the community.”
— Galati’s MAA submission
At LGA Architecture, Galati and his team have redefined the traditional firm model. They prioritize the voices of the communities they serve, placing the needs and wishes of others above the design or the "big idea." This approach reflects Galati's genuine interest in people rather than ego-driven pursuits. As Dawn Savage, FSMPS, CPSM aptly notes, "His achievements and contributions to the professional services marketing field are innumerable, but it’s never being about him…He plants seeds of innovation and growth in others and helps inspire their growth."
Craig played a pivotal role in business development and design, contributing to the firm's growth from five employees to 35 by 1999. Recognizing his talent, the managing partner entrusted Craig with leading the firm's marketing efforts. Craig spearheaded the acquisition of numerous significant projects until 2010, when the firm, like many others, faced challenges during the Great Recession.
Throughout his SMPS tenure, his contributions have been substantial. He is recognized as a mentor, a superior role model, and a dedicated industry professional for the Society, his peer organizations, and throughout the A/E/C Industry. Approachable by nature, Craig gives freely of his knowledge, time, and experience. He is engaging and represents our industry well through his collaboration, advocacy, integrity, and accomplishments.”
— Stacy Stout, FSMPS, CPSM | Founding Principal, BRANDiac Strategies
In his submission, it says. “LGA Architecture is driven by the purpose of enriching life through its work, mirroring Craig’s personal leadership style. Under his guidance, LGA provides services that support designing memorable experiences for its clients while providing deep care for the environment, people, and connection to community. This creates opportunities to integrate a marketing mindset into his practice, infusing professional services such as strategic planning, community outreach, organizational development, and interpretation into the practice.”
Eager to deepen his marketing knowledge, Craig joined SMPS, ultimately achieving the esteemed titles of CPSM and Fellow of SMPS in 2014. In 2019, Craig earned Fellowship status in the American Institute of Architects, a testament to his outstanding contributions to the field. Now, in 2023, Galati has been recognized as the Weld Cox Marketing Achievement Award winner.
I was struck by how he looks at things from angles I never thought of. He has an uncanny ability to turn things around and analyze them in a way without pretext or bias. I know much of that stems from solving spatial relationships as an architect, but I’ve met too few people in my life that can take that process and meld it into business. Craig has influenced the way I look at things in business and in life.”
— Brad Thurman, PE, FSMPS, CPSM | Principal and Chief Marketing Officer | Wallace Design Collective
Craig Galati stands as an example of the power of a marketing-led firm. In a world where true leadership is marked by empathy, adaptability, and dedication to serving others, his story serves as a beacon for those on their own leadership journeys, reminding us that sometimes, the most impactful leaders are the ones who emerge from challenging circumstances, armed with a genuine desire to make a positive difference.
