Taking a leap and pursuing a job change is a weighty decision fraught with considerations – emotional, financial, professional, not to mention loads of stressors and uncertainty. After all, how can you really tell if a firm is a good fit? Does it truly offer the career development, mentorship, and growth opportunities it touts? Is its culture welcoming and accepting? Does it live up to its professed values and embrace mindsets and movements that are critically important to individuals, society, and the planet?
These concerns are top-of-mind for persons considering a career move. With talent acquisition needs at record highs – for SmithGroup and across the industry – the communications team was tasked to develop new messaging and materials to help elevate recruiting activities and set SmithGroup apart from competitors.
The team responded, developing a multi-platform series of podcast-style videos that addressed several topics of import while spotlighting SmithGroup’s greatest asset – its people. Featuring pairs of employees representing a cross-section of tenures, disciplines, and demographics, these brief yet impactful “Off the Cuff” videos feature teammates openly and authentically discussing topics ranging from steps SmithGroup is taking to mitigate the climate emergency or promote equity, diversity, and inclusion (within the firm and beyond), to how employees benefit from the company’s hybrid work structure or how they’ve grown professionally and personally while working at the firm.

Videos were designed to speak to topics that, per human resources, candidates stated were critically important when evaluating potential employers:
  • Career development opportunities
  • EDI (at SmithGroup, within the industry, within society)
  • Hybrid, remote, and work-from-home opportunities
  • Opportunities to work on awesome projects
  • How SmithGroup is working to mitigate the climate emergency
These videos each ran approximately two minutes. In the future, we’ll strive to create shorter, more succinct videos. Feedback: “This was very satisfying to work on! I’m grateful for the chance to tell my story and contribute to the creation of some really excellent content. We shared a lot, so thanks to the communications team for turning this into something meaningful and honest.”
