Overview
The construction industry is the 4th worst industry for retention. In June 2023, there were 374,000 open construction positions and the Association of Builders and Contractors estimates another 340,000 new workers will need to come into the industry to meet the demand. What are the unique actions that your culture needs to be taking to retain talent?
Challenge Statement
High turnover is inhibiting our ability to compete in the marketplace.
Strategy
We have to think bigger than a “people centric culture.”
Solutions
This group proposes a five-year “recalibration” of firm culture to address the talent management issues and the real struggles that A/E/C firms experience because of the style of work that must be upheld. Adjustments for better retention:
  • Do they have the right supervisor?
  • Do they have the right title?
  • Are firms making micro-investments in things that are important to that individual employee? For example, wellness benefits and opportunities to participate in community service projects.
  • Rebrand the term “work/life balance” and make choices that fit our industry, not the average workplace.
